CRATERS TO COAST ALLIANCE

The Heytesbury and District Landcare Network is working in partnership with four companies to create a zone of “Conservation Excellence” from the volcanic craters in the north to the coast in the south. The Craters to Coast Alliance is made up of four local gas companies; Origin Energy, Tru Energy Woodside and Santos with support from Landcare Australia. The Alliance is dedicated to supporting the Landcare movement within the Heytesbury district.

This year seven projects are running under the Craters to Coast Zone of Conservation Excellence program. These include;

1. Roadside Recovery

Weed control and revegetation along 3-5km of high value conservation roadside.

2. Farm Shelterbelt Project

Fund 10 first time Landcarers to revegetate a 0.2ha shelterbelt on their property, and introduce them to the concept of Landcare and sustainable agriculture.

3. Community Pest Plant & Animal Program

This project has already been completed with five Landcare Groups each receiving $1000 to undertake priority Pest Plant and Animal activities. Activities range from group spray equipment maintenance to group orientated weed control.

4. Craters to Coast BioFund Project

Through this project 29 landholders and community groups will receive funding to undertake a range of environmental rehabilitation projects as determined through HDLN’s annual EOI process. Some projects have been initiated with weed control and fencing being undertaken and tree planting soon to comence.

5. Landcare Community Nursery

HDLN is in the process of purchasing second hand nursery benches to allow the HDLN volunteer nursery group to increase seedling production and make for a safer working environment.

6. Creators to Coast Schools Program

Two local schools will be funded $1000 each for environmental educational programs. Funding will be angled towards existing or forming school environment groups to undertake environmental educational activities at a local level.

7. Community Public Land Enhancement program

In partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia, a group of international volunteers will work alongside local community groups to assist with a range of environmental and community activites.
