Threatened Species Program:

Threatened species in our backyard

The Heytesbury region is home to a variety of threatened flora and fauna communities and species. In order to ensure that these species and communities continue to survive in the region the HDLN together with local landholders, the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Latrobe University are undertaking major projects focused on the conservation of threatened species throughout the Heytesbury region.

The Southern Toadlet

Plans are underway for workshops and volunteer opportunities to be held locally that will give you the opportunity to contribute to the conservation of threatened species while getting some hands on experience in how to record and identify local plants & wildlife, get them entered into important State-wide Databases and identify important habitat. Plus you'll find out more about the fascinating vegetation communities and wildlife focussed on by the projects and possibly have the opportunity to see and even handle rare and threatened animals.

Watch this space and local media for further details of these events.

Dung Beetle Surveys

This season has been different from those of past years, what has this meant for your dung beetles?

In 2008-2009, the Dairy Action Program provided 67 dung beetle colonies to landholders for release across the district.

Click here to see a map showing what species were released where.

Now we'd like to hear from you how they're faring...

So kick over some cow pats and give us a call to let us know what you find, or even bring in a sample for id.
