Jean & Chester Porter Bitterns on Farm Project was an initiative seeking to improve conservation outcomes for one of our most threatened waterbirds with help from communities that manage, live and work in their wetland landscapes.
In Victoria, 20,000 out of 25,000 natural wetlands are on private property. Heytesbury District Landcare Network helped Chris Purnell at Birdlife Australia work with local landholders. We appreciate very much the assistance that local Landcare groups, landholders and community members gave us.
Birdlife Australia are pleased to report the Heytesbury is a bona fide Bittern hotspot. Twenty-one farms were visited with 10 threatened species identified out of 101 bird species observed.
