Last year we had a go at propagating plants from cuttings—with some fantastic results! Our biggest successes included beautiful indigenous Correas (reflexa and alba), Bower spinach, and Myoporum species. These species are now available as tubestock from the nursery!
This year we ran a cuttings workshop for the community. Big shoutout to Sea Box (Alyxia buxifolia)— Dave Smurthwaite’s pick for most underrated plant. Dark green leaves, white flowers, red berries… and birds love it. It even hedges.
Cuttings? It’s a numbers game. Stack the odds in your favour:
- Rooting hormone
- Free-draining mix (no fertiliser)
- Keep it humid
- Always take cuttings from healthy plants and remove any flowers
Some plants are easier than others. Good starters are: Correas, Karkalla (pigface) + bower spinach. We tried some important species that are tricky from seed: Leucopogons (Beard heath) + Sea Box.
We’re hoping to have some of these in tubestock next year.
